Use a public M3U8 test URL when you need a known-good HLS stream. If the sample plays in LivePlayer but your own link fails, the player is probably fine and the problem is with your source.
Only test streams you are authorized to access. The samples below are public demo playlists commonly used for browser playback checks.
How to use these sample streams
- Copy one of the M3U8 URLs below.
- Open LivePlayer.
- Paste the URL and press Play.
- Watch for 20 to 60 seconds.
- If the sample works, paste your own stream and compare.
You can also inspect playlist structure with the M3U8 Analyzer.
Recommended public HLS test streams
1. Mux test stream
https://test-streams.mux.dev/x36xhzz/x36xhzz.m3u8
A reliable first check for browser HLS playback and basic playlist loading.
2. Apple bipbop master playlist
https://devstreaming-cdn.apple.com/videos/streaming/examples/img_bipbop_adv_example_ts/master.m3u8
Useful when you want a master playlist with multiple variants. Apple documents HLS playlists here: Example playlists for HTTP Live Streaming.
3. Tears of Steel HLS
https://demo.unified-streaming.com/k8s/features/stable/video/tears-of-steel/tears-of-steel.ism/.m3u8
A common demo for longer VOD-style playback checks.
What a good sample test tells you
- Sample plays, your stream fails: focus on your URL, tokens, CORS, segments, or DRM.
- Sample also fails: check browser extensions, network filters, or page-level HTTPS issues.
- Sample plays only in Safari: compare native HLS support versus MSE-based playback in other browsers.
A short comparison checklist
- Play a public sample in LivePlayer.
- Play your stream in the same browser.
- Open DevTools Network and compare playlist requests.
- Note 403, 404, CORS, or mixed-content errors.
- Inspect your playlist in the M3U8 Analyzer if the manifest loads.
